Last year johanna contacted us and hinted at doing a session on the san francisco coast, but had to wait. it would not be long before we once again heard her siren song calling us northward. this year the timing was perfect. we were going to be nearby for a wedding in palo alto. with the green light lit we left home in our rearview and headed to the golden gate bridge. it was time to get out and smell the thistles.
before arriving at our pre-arranged spot we had never met johanna and matt, but it only took a short walk through a tunnel with them to know they were awesome. matt is on the verge of becoming the next hansel, and johanna is so beautiful that modeling agencies dare not sign her for fear that all their other models would instantly be out of work.
johanna and matt got married in england and had their wedding in a boarding school that just one week prior to their wedding date was an island due to massive rain and flooding. i wish we would have been there for that. i would jump right out of my doc martens for a chance to shoot a wedding in england. but i digress. while johanna and matt’s wedding photos documented their day and will always hold special memories, they wanted something more. they wanted to capture more of this time in their life. a time when youthful fun and love are in every glance of each other. (enter ohana)
let me just take you on a brief sidebar here. this kind of session has been called many things in recent years. it’s been a bridal session, a trash the dress session, an anti-bridal session, and many more. i’m sure it will be called something else next week, but for now we like to call it an aftermath session, or just simply a day-after session. they’re not so much about trashing a dress as they are letting brides have fun in their dress more than just once (and not worrying if it gets a little dirty this time). they’re about taking the time to capture how amazing a bride looks on her wedding day without all the stress and rigid timelines of a wedding day. if we’re lucky, they’re also about getting the groom in on the action and steaming up a few lenses with his beautiful bride.
in short, they’re styled, sexy, fun.
they are our favorite kind of photo session, and the reason why we chose those three words to describe our studio.
take a look at johanna and matt here. they’ll show you what we’re talkin about. they’re pretty much our poster children.
this was one of the first shots i took of johanna. are you believing how amazing her smile is? i knew right here that it was going to be a very good day.
this next shot of mine won the kim’s choice award. i would like to thank GOD for making the wind, johanna for looking stunning as always, and my wife for voting for me. thanks lobster.
remember that scene in wayne’s world when garth looks into donna dixon’s eyes? johanna gets that all the time. if she were a president she’d be babraham lincoln.
on a side note, did you ever find bugs bunny attractive when he put on a dress and played a girl bunny?
neither did i. i was just asking.
i love this next shot that kim took of johanna.
fun fact #823 – soylent green is people. kidding. although that is true, this fun fact is about people that aren’t soylent or green. while i was taking shots of johanna some random people came up to kim and started chatting her up about our cameras and asking about photography stuff in general. this happens freakishly often to kim by the way. i don’t know what it is. it’s like she passed out at a frat party and someone wrote “talk to me” in sharpie on her forehead. people always talk to kim. anyway, after they left matt said that he’s still not used to that. he said in england most people keep to themselves and don’t really talk to strangers, similar to people in big cities like los angeles, new york, and many others. san francisco is different though. the people there just have a cool, friendly vibe. similar to people in san diego. i could be totally wrong because my experiences are skewed by the kim factor. i’m no psychologist but i’m sure someone has done a study somewhere. people intrigue me. maybe that’s a sub-concious reason why i chose to be a photographer. wow. i think i just had a personal breakthrough right there. thanks for being part of my group session.
anywho, sorry to get so deep into human psychosis. we now return to our regularly scheduled programming of johanna and matt’s hotness.
we have to point out something right here. if you’ve been to san francisco then you’ll know what we’re talking about. if not, here’s the scoop. of the handful of times we have been to san francisco it has been the same. when you’re out in the sunshine it’s very nice, when you step into the shade it’s cold, and when the sun goes down it’s freezing (keep in mind we live in san diego and our dainty skin shivers whenever the temp dips below 70).
johanna was unbelievably awesome. this shot was taken in the shade as the sun was setting. you’d never know how cold it was by looking at johanna here. the wind made it feel like it was 20 degrees outside, but she powered through the cold and gave us some amazing shots.
another kim shot coming up next. back in world war two these king kong sized loops were used to anchor a coastal defense gun the size of texas. today they make a perfect prop for the lovely johanna.
my faith in johanna giving us stunning shots one after the other is firmly in tact, but my faith in ridiculously thick concrete is now shaky at best. this crack went completely through this concrete wall that was easily three feet thick. gotta love our california earthquakes and shifting tectonic plates.
is it just kim and i, or does matt look like mark ruffalo’s handsomer brother?
johanna and matt, you are such a sweet couple. we really enjoyed exploring seldom seen parts of san francisco and braving the chilly winds with you. although this was the first time we had ever met you made us feel very welcome. we were thrilled to find out you were game to go anywhere and do almost anything, which is why we had to get you two to take this next shot. you probably don’t do this kind of thing in public (often), but matt did seem to be quite comfortable down there.
we love you two! thank you for being incredible in every way. kim and i wish you both many many happy years together. we already know matt isn’t dumb (he put a ring on your finger as soon as he could) but we’ll wish him good luck getting his degree anyway. take care you two. hope to see you in the san diego sunshine sometime soon.
